The South Melbourne Centaurs are a community-based team primarily located in the South Melbourne, St.Kilda and South Yarra area, however, have been recruiting from far and wide across Melbourne. Making their debut in the Victorian Quidditch Association’s Easton Shield in 2014, the Centaurs established themselves as a force to be reckoned with thanks to their perseverance and sportsmanship.
With wins and close losses against the top ranked teams of the Victorian ladder in 2015, the Centaurs proved that in the right conditions, they are not to be underestimated. The Centaurs made their national debut at the QUAFL Australia Quidditch Championships in 2015; narrowly missing out on a place in the top 12.
2016 was a re-build year for the team; gaining players with a variety of skills to join their ranks. The team relies on a strong chaser line up and a small but strong beater line up and, although sometimes in past seasons have been lacking in numbers, have overcome such obstacles with their sheer determination and a “never giving in” attitude to cement a steady place the middle of the VQA’s Victoria Cup ladder.
The experience brought by Victorian Leadbeaters’ squad members Michael ‘Dundee’ Braham (Centaurs Captain) and Rachel Davis have assisted the team in developing new skills and implementing them in games; with the team getting stronger and reaching a peak as the 2016 season drew to a close.
Not quite able to break the Victorian top 4, the South Melbourne Centaurs are coming into 2017 training harder than ever to reach new heights as a team and on the Victoria Cup ladder. Training at Fawkner Park three times a week, Wednesday and Sunday evening, and alternating Tuesday and Thursday evenings, the team aims to be a big threat this year!
The Centaurs are excited to start 2017 with an almost full line up! However are constantly recruiting, and encourage all who think they have what it takes to contact the club or check out their Facebook page for more details!
